Spesso con il termine Appaloosa si indica un particolare tipo di mantello ma la razza Appaloosa ha caratteristiche ben definite oltre alla particolare colorazione tipica.

Often with the term Appaloosa it indicates a particular type of coat but the Appaloosa breed has well defined characteristics besides the particular typical colouration.

Gli Appaloosa vennero allevati con particolare accuratezza dai Nez Perce ( tribù che abitava l’Oregon,Idaho e Sud stato di Washington) che li selezionarono dai cavalli importati dagli spagnoli e scambiati con altre tribù e i pionieri per la loro robustezza, il carattere e l’attitudine al lavoro.

The Appaloosa were bred with particular care by the Nez Perce ( tribes inhabiting Oregon, Idaho and South Washington) who selected them from horses imported by the Spanish and traded with other tribes and pioneers for their robustness, character and attitude to work.

La razza infatti prende il nome dal fiume Palouse che delimitava il territorio Nez Perce e i cavalli vennero prima chiamati “Palouse Horse”, poi ” Palousey”, ” Apalousey” e infine Appaloosa ” hardy tough bred of Indiand and Spanish horses” . In seguito la razza rischiò l’estinzione dopo la sconfitta dei Nez Perce nel 1877 (Nez Perce War).

The breed takes its name from the Palouse River which delimited the Nez Perce territory and the horses were first called “Palouse Horse”, then ” Palousey”, “Apalousey” and finally Appaloosa ” hardy tough bred of Indiand and Spanish horses”. Later the race threatened extinction after the defeat of the Nez Perce in 1877 (Nez Perce War).

Nel 1938 venne fondato da Claude J.Thompson l’Appaloosa Horse Club ( ApHC) in Oregon . Nel 1947 l’organizzazione si sposta a Moscow in Idaho. Thompson riusci a recuperare alcune fattrici Appaloosa e le incrocio’ con stalloni arabi . Gli incroci si estesero poi ad altre razze.

In 1938 the Appaloosa Horse Club ( Aphc) in Oregon was founded by Claude J.Thompson. In 1947 the organization moved to Moscow in Idaho. Thompson managed to recover some Appaloosa mares and cross them with Arab stallions. The crossings then extended to other races.

Dal 1983 gli Appaloosa vengono selezionati con l’apporto di sangue Quarter Horse, Arabo e Purosangue Inglese . Nel 1975 l’Appaloosa venne nominato cavallo simbolo dello stato dell’Idaho.
